Decorating Ideas For a Child’s Bedroom

The transition period from a young child’s bedroom to a more mature room can be tricky to get right, so at Black By Design we’ve put together a guide that includes decorating ideas for a child’s bedroom to inspire this new chapter. Whether you’re just looking for ways to update a child’s room or want to transform a young looking area into a bedroom suitable for a teenager, we’ll have some homeware and furniture that will be the perfect additions.

Decorating inspiration – bedroom colour palettes

This may be the decoration stage in a child’s life when the gender correlation colours of blue and pink from the past are being pushed aside for something a little more grown up. But when it comes to decorating the walls of a bedroom, are you looking for something versatile that can last a number of years and in turn, keep up with their changing tastes – or will decorating a bedroom for the here and now work better?

We’ve got some children’s bedroom decorating tips to help:

  • Opt for a neutral colour palette with accents of colour – This may not necessarily call for stark white walls, but a neutrally decorated bedroom works well in terms of longevity. Adding versatile pops of colour, which can be changed accordingly, is an interior design win for those looking to keep the room looking fresh, without needing to redecorate regularly.
  • Add wallpaper in unexpected places – Choosing a lovely wallpaper then cutting it up may seem detrimental to the overall impression it gives, but subtle additions of wallpaper can work wonders in a bedroom. Add wallpaper inside of drawers, at the back of bookcases or shelves or even simply frame a piece of wallpaper and hang on the wall for instant art!
  • If your child is all about colour, go for colourful patterns – Depending on their age, your child’s bedroom decor can reflect their current interests or showcase their personality. Do this by painting patterns or vertical stripes as a stimulating decor feature wall, or select a bold colour.

When the foundations of the room are decided upon, accessorising the bedroom becomes the main task to make sure that your child enjoys spending time in their space, whatever their age.

Practical accessories

Having somewhere to store souvenirs, school notes and photographs will appeal to a young teenager, so why not give them somewhere to display their favourite things in one place? The message boards from Block Design are perfectly suited for pinning jewellery and pictures on the wall and come in a pegboard organiser or a mesh notice board design. The multicoloured pegs on the wooden message board from Block Design are a great way to infuse pops of colour into the room. Message boards can be hung anywhere in the room but may be better situated above a desk for easy access to important notes, or can even act as an inspirational mood board!

Every room should have a clock, whether it’s a wall clock or an alarm clock, and with so many fashionable clock designs on the market there’s bound to be one that would fit right into a child’s bedroom. We stock a wonderful range of stylish wall clocks that will provide a decorative finish to the room, as well as helping them get ready for school on time!

Soft furnishings

As this room is going to be used as a sanctuary to escape to, you want your child to feel comfortable and able to relax in their bedroom. The dream of building a cosy nest where they can enjoy playing games or read a book in can become a reality with some soft furnishings. A throw on the bed and multiple cushions can add a certain amount of warmth to any room, making them pleasant additions to a bedroom. Our throws and cushions range offers many options that include neutral muted tones to bright colours and patterned cushions to plain cushions. Soft furnishings can also be changed frequently to keep in line with your child’s colour preferences and the latest interior design trends.

Lighting ideas

Not only can children’s bedroom lighting be practical, it can also add a fun, decorative element to the room. Multiple light sources in a bedroom can really add dimension and depth to the room, as well as being a necessity if studying or more creative activities will be done at a desk. Statement lighting is a big interior design trend right now and we love the range of statement lights from Vita Copenhagen which blends quality Danish design with playful finishes, such as the range of Carmina mini pendant light shades. With this range of lights you’re free to colour co ordinate with the room due to the yellow, turquoise, pink and blue light shades, or keep it neutral with a smoky grey or classic white. The Eos feather pendant shade from Vita Copenhagen would also be a fabulous focal point in a child’s bedroom – if you’re looking for a unique light, this is the one!

Boys and girls alike are bound to love learning more about geography with the illuminated globe light from Wild & Wolf. Not only are these colourful light up globes educational, but they provide a soft light and look incredibly distinctive, making them the ideal desk accessory or bookshelf accompaniment. The bright colours are eye catching enough to ensure that these globes will become a definite talking point when their friends are round.

Additional lighting for a child’s bedroom could be fairy lights or indoor LED lights that can be placed around the head of the bed, over a mirror or surrounding a window. Fairy lights, whether mains connected or battery operated, can really create a relaxing atmosphere in a bedroom and are the ideal lights to have on whilst getting ready for bed. We love the unique heart shaped LED lights from Sirius that are perfect for decorating the room as they provide a beautiful soft glow whilst looking visually appealing with it’s chain of white hearts.
