How To Create The Perfect Guest Room

Opening your home to friends and loved ones enables you to spend more quality time with them, and often it’s a necessity for special occasions such as Christmas. If you’re faced with a spare room that lacks a clear design, or a guest room which needs some freshening up, here at Black By Design we have just the right additions and suggestions to help you create the perfect guest room in no time.

Room theme & design

To create a consistent feel to the room with the rest of your home, you could use a similar colour palette that is reflected in your other rooms. We also think that a neutral room theme creates a relaxing space that would make your guest feel at home. Here’s some tips on how to create a great guest room that looks stylish and homely:

  • Apply the same principles as you would in your own bedroom
  • Be careful not to over do it with furniture – perhaps a double bed, bedside tables with drawers, a lamp and a wardrobe are good basics to stick with
  • Position the bed away from the wall so it can be easily accessed
  • Add finishing touches to make the room feel less like a hotel room
  • Ensure curtains or blinds are sleep-friendly – a room that is too light will inhibit sleep!
  • If your guest is staying for a long period of time, provide them with a laundry basket and spare towels for their convenience – these little touches can make them feel more welcome in your home

Guest room furniture & accessories

For a modern take on the traditional wardrobe, we suggest the excellent Toj clothes racks (£229) from Normann Copenhagen which is simple in it’s industrial design. It provides a space for guests to store their clothes, shoes and bags to help them organise their belongings, whilst also giving a spacious feel to the room.

Our contemporary lighting collections at Black By Design will no doubt make it difficult to decide which to include in your guest room. We have some modern wonderful versions of the classic desk lamp from brand Wild & Wolf which are available in a whole host of colours to suit your colour scheme. For decorative flair, we love the impressive designer lighting options from Vita Copenhagen which includes the beautiful Silvia tripod table lamps (£78) in an elegant feathered design.

Finishing touches

It’s the little things that can make a big difference, and that’s certainly true when it comes to creating the perfect guest room in your home. Help make your spare room a home away from home for your loved ones with some home accessories.

Play your best host role by preparing your guest room with some clean fluffy towels from Le Jacquard Francais. Stick with classic luxurious white towels or explore the beautiful trims and embroidery on the towels from this stunning brand.

Not only are mirrors great for getting ready for the day, they also reflect light and create a sense of space. This makes them an essential addition to any guest room, especially if it’s a room where space is limited. We can’t get enough of the versatile Hub Floor Mirror (£150) from Umbra which comes in a modern easel design with a clothes rack incorporated into the frame. The natural ashwood and black rubber trim ensures it will fit effortlessly into any interiors theme, and the easy to move nature of the mirror means your guest can reposition it to suit them.

Who doesn’t like to be greeted with flowers? Brighten up your guests stay with a beautiful bouquet of (real or faux) flowers placed in a stylish vase which will also compliment the room by adding a touch of colour. We have a stunning selection of designer vases here at Black By Design with various finishes, such as matte colour, iridescent pearl, clear or coloured glass. For a neutral colour palette, the hand painted spherical vase (£40) from LSA International has a wonderful reflective platinum finish. Simply place on the bedside table for them to enjoy.
